Looking to start a career as a qualified artisan in South Africa’s mining industry? Rio Tinto has opened applications for its Artisan Learnership Programme 2026 in KwaZulu-Natal.
The programme is designed for unemployed South African youth who want to gain an occupational trade qualification and practical industry experience.
Trades Available
Successful applicants will train in one of the following trades:
- Diesel Mechanic
- Boiler Maker
- Millwright
- Refractory Mason
- Electrician
- Mechanical Fitter
- Instrumentation
What the Programme Offers
This occupationally directed learnership combines:
- Theoretical classroom training
- Practical workshop training
- Work-based learning experience
After successful completion, learners will receive a Trade Certificate accredited by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO).
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be a South African citizen
- Be unemployed youth
- Have completed Grade 12/Matric with:
- Core Mathematics
- Physical Science or Technical Matric
- Have a trade-related qualification
- Have a valid South African driver’s license (Code B minimum)
- Not be registered on another SETA-funded learnership or apprenticeship
- Reside within the King Cetshwayo District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal

- CV / Curriculum Vitae
- Matric certificate
- Trade qualification
- South African ID document
- Valid driver’s license
- Proof of residence / domicile address
- Affidavit confirming you are not participating in another SETA-funded learning programme
